How to get better Performance?

Postby Gusbenz3000 » Thu Aug 28, 2003 8:06 am

Look guys I have a mac and I know a lot of you are going to make fun or just plain say macsx suck(for games) Anyway the game runs fine but I want to know what your settings are that make the game run better but look a little bad. Right now I use the low light map and want to use the high but it seems to slow me down when a lot of people are on a server. I can stand the light map..so what I'm asking is what are your settings for Performance? Thanks:D

PS. I have 320MB of RAM and I'm going to get 768MB of RAm will that help out a bit:confused:

I don't know much about Macs but I suspect they are somewhat similar to PC's.

That said, ram probably will not help you that much. Unless your disk is thrashing a lot then it won't do anything aside from maybe helping you load things up faster. By the sound of it, you might benefit more from getting a better video card as opposed to more ram. What video card do you have now btw?

I have an 8MB video card  Yep it's old, but if ram helps things load faster, thats always good. Also I want to get more RAM so that I can play the game in OS X...that just does not want to run in OS X and I think if I have more RAM it will run.

want your game to look bad but run good? change these settings when you are in a game. The number one biggy that changes the brightness is
r_intensity 5 .....it's legal in all competition so don't feel bad:P
r_picmip 4 makes the faces look crappy but runs better and faster
there's like overmapbrightbits you can change to 4 and so on, but intensity is a biggy;)
after you do that, maybe go into your .cfg and edit it so you won't have to vid_restart after everytime u enter a server. Give it a shot:P see what u think. Here is my .cfg if you're interested in giving it a whirl.

Okay then, I know you are not looking to upgrade your video card but you really should. 8mb on a video card really is old. You can get a better video card than that and it should be pretty cheap. Perhaps a Radeon 7000 or something. It should only run you about $60 american. I bought mine for my other computer for $99 canadian.

8 MB video card? oh my gosh...I think you have an antique! save it lol

but yeah, you have GOT to get a new video card. all the ram, HD space and Ghz upgrades will not make it run any faster.

8 Mb graphics card? wow, when I tried wolf with a voodoo 3 with 16 MB didn´t worked, but when using a Geforce 2 mx 64MB seemed to work things better... but now my new Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128 MB is the shit.

Hi there,

to answer Seether's question: I bought a Geforce 4 5200 at 80€ and it's really impressive (in comparison with my old... Geforce 2) but if you're looking for something about 300$, maybe you can check a Geforce 4 5600 with 128Mb DDR ram... It should cost about 200-250$...
Here's a link to a belgian reseller (the best around Brussels:
http://www.padeg.be).For graphic cards, clic on 'carte graphique' and any card you see in the list has its link to the manufacturer's website...
I hope it'll help many seekers for best material

Greetings

Xavier

PS: Gusbenz3000, your best solution, if you wanna keep playing, is maybe buying a cheap PC (for about 600 USD you get a really good one) and leaving your Mac to your little sister. I don't have anything against Mac's:
1) that's great for working (isn't windows a pale copy of Mac's Operating system??? :-) )
2) If, 12-15 years ago, Mac had had a marketing as good as their engineering, we should not speak about PC any more...
Please, remember that the actual Mac's processors (Motorola) are the best processors, for the moment... until the new AMD 64bit arrive, within 1-4 months...

Greetings,

Xavier
