Reno Air Race pics...

Postby Rule of Wrist » Thu Sep 18, 2003 1:01 pm

I missed the latest competition scrim because of my trip to the Reno air races last weekend... the weather was great, and I thought I would share a few pics from the trip...

Ahh, plane art... somehow, that pilot looks familiar... I mean... nuthin....

A REAL engine... :D

An Allison V1710 V12 sitting in the back of a chevy full size truck... 1710 is for cubic inches of displacement... these engines were used in P38 Lightnings, among others...

What they do with people who park illegally... a few seconds later they dropped it from about 1,000 ft.... :D

An F7F Tigercat... arrived just too late to see service in the war, but cool nonetheless...

A VERY nice stock configuration F8F Bearcat. Designed to intercept Japanese Kamikaze planes, these things are small and fast... But arrived just after the war was over, so not many were produced...

Next time you go to the SAAB dealership, ask if they have any of these available... :D

(SAAB J35 Draken... )

Can't remember the name of the manufacturer, but It's called an MB5... those are counter-rotating props attached to a 1900hp Rolls-Royce Griffon engine on the front of that thing...

It's hard to get good pics when they're moving so fast...

This is the T-6 Texan trainer race, they're about 50-75ft off the ground and that same distance apart coming around the first turn... T-6 races are usually very close...

Rare Bear, a HEAVILY modified Bearcat, coming back from its race. Instead of the stock R2800 radial in a bearcat, Rare Bear uses a Turbo-Supercharged R3350 engine from a Super Constellation airliner. This engine is not stock either... it has fancy water injection systems along with nitrous... all in all, it's good for a continuous 3,000 hp, max power of somewhere near 3,500-4,000 hp (they don't say for sure)...

All of this adds up to 500+ mph, and the coolest sound I think I've ever heard...

Rare Bear going into the first turn... the prop on this thing is so big, and the blades so wide, that it caused the air and the bleachers I was sitting in to vibrate and resonate as it came around the home pylon... it was like thunder followed by the music of its engine... totally awe-inspiring.....

Look who's talking :D

Here's something interesting... not sure exactly what it is... it looks like a Long EZ but it's bigger, and I'm not sure what those are on the wings, but I'm guessing fuel tanks... pretty cool though :D
