GF 4 4200 vs Gigabyte Radeon 9800 Pro

Postby Mugzy » Thu Oct 30, 2003 4:01 pm

How much improvment would I get going from a GeForce 4 4200 to a 128M Radeon 9800 Pro?

Is it enough to spend $200?

WOOT! a good bit now, and a TON when the DX9 games start hitting shelves (Half-life2, Doom3, etc). 4200 is base of the line GF4, and is dx8.1 hardware, with slower mem and core. 9800 is dx9.0 hardware, with much faster mem and core. You should see immediate improvement. (just my biased 2 cents :D)

Well yeah, he's pretty much right. Even if your framerate doesn't skyrocket upward you'll still be able to crack up anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing, while getting atleast your current frames if not better then your current frames. The 9800 Pro is incredible for those features, it just sucks them down, little framerate difference. I say go for it, especially if you can sell off that 4200 to someone, then you've really got a deal.

It's comparable to a Honda and a Ferrari...

Trust me, you'll notice a huge, huge improvement.

It's like night and day

It's one of the fastest cards available so you can't hope for better performance

I'm going to wait untill the Raedon 10 000 come out(by then It would be called the "Raedon XZ X-Trem 7 R-O High Output NOS XT" or sothing like that)

Videocards just don;t seem that advanced yet

The next gen cards wont be out for a while yet, and when they do come out, no games will be able to take advantage of their speed.

Get a 9800pro, you'll be able to run every game for atleast 2 years

Shockwave said it best. I have a 9700 Pro, and I've yet to find a game that it doesn't destroy. Even the much maligned framerates of Halo were nothing for my 9700.

I have both the 4200 and the 9800. There is absolutely NO comparison. Simple as that.
