Compatible?

Postby (>Tool<) » Mon Nov 10, 2003 10:46 pm

I'm wondering, if I have a computer with these specs, P4 2.4Bghz socket 478 processor, 1 gig pc2100 ddr ram, on a mobo that supports a 533FSB but somehow only supports pc2100ddr ram, can I get one of those new socket 478 mobo's with 533/800mhz FSB and put my shit in it? I figure it should be ok, I know the ram is slow but thats the next upgrade cause I want the AGP 8x. at 130 bucks for the board I think its a good move, I could also run the chip at 3ghz, cause at stock level my cpu runs at about 25 degrees C

Intel quad-pumps their FSB's, so a 533 bus is really a 133 bus (533/4=133.25). PC2100 is equal to a 133 bus as well (266/2=133), so that's why your board only supports it. A mobo that supports 533/800 will support PC2100/PC3200 DDR, so yes, your hardware should work fine. Intel procs are fine with having memory at a different speed than the proc (unlike AMD), so it'd be ok to upgrade the board, then the mem, then later the proc. (or proc than mem).

Thats what I thought, cause why upgrade to memory I can't support before getting the mobo lol. Its one at a time said Tool's budget. I'm going to then get a gig of ddr500 (maybe 400) then after that, one of those new 3.2 ghz gaming chips with all that cache, lovely lovely. I'm so happy I build my own machine, small upgrades one at a time and I still have a 12000 benchmark with what I have now on AGP4x so I can't wait. Plus I can run my processor at 3ghz and quite cool. I did it before til my mobo choked on it cause it only supports pc2100 and I overclocked the pc2100 and it hated me for that. anyways, thanks man, I just wanted someones 'you are correct' before actually ordering the parts. I should have the money for this in 10-15 days. Woo! then comes harddrive, then powersupply. I also have ram heatsinks so the overclocking should go smoothly. I dunno what it is, but I love putting hours of work into my gaming machine. Makes me feel less spoiled unlike the kids who's parents buy them an X-box and a million games. My machine would toast an X-box anyways. Good shit, sorry for the rant lol, I'm at tech school and bored.

A few random thoughts....

1. Do you already have the ramsinks installed? If yes, cool. If not, I'd be REAL careful doing it. A buddy of mine (who isn't an idiot when it comes to pc repair) managed to kill them, surge his mobo, then surge my mobo, all in the process of finding out that they were grounding out the memory. It REALLY sucked  :help:

2. What p/s do you have now? I'd really recommend a good Antec TruePower or something equivalent, at least 350-400watts (if you're planning on overclocking, like you mentioned)

3. Intel mobo's usually will let you run the mem asynchronous with the proc, so you could overclock the processor with even touching the mem.

4. The difference between AGP 4x and 8x is about 1-5% right now. No game even really uses up all that AGP 4x has to offer, so don't expect a huge performance increase there (although it does sound nice to say you are at 8x :D)

5. No need to apologize, I'm afraid I have the same disease, and quite possibly worse than you! (See sig for what I've done to the rig, which doesn't included the case mods, as well as the upcoming 1U HSF mod to my 9800pro, followed by volt mods to it :D)

I have a 400 watt duel fan powersupply, and the ramsinks are already installed. They're thermal take copper and they're working fine. also my processor right now runs at 25C in an aluminum case with 7 fans and one fan in the window.

A good software tool to use is winbond hardware doctor. It will give you all of your system voltages and fan speeds etc... MY mobo came with this utility.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, I just ordered an albatron, posted in the "my new computer" thread by Evan, you can check the link there if you wish and I'll find that tool if it doesn't come with my mobo.

7 fans ??? Jeez. How do you hear the sounds of the game?? hahahah. Better strap that thing down before it takes off.

thats what speaker volume controls are for;)

BTW, Tool does your new mobo have an AGP/PCI lock in the bios?
If you are going to be overclocking that can be really helpful. It allows you to lock your agp and pci @ 66/33. That way you can increase your fsb without changing your agp and pci frequencies. It helps overall system stabiltiy.
