I'm a HGTV junkie!

Postby MoDyna » Thu Dec 25, 2003 11:10 am

I'm coming clean. I have it so bad that I've seen every episode of "This Old House" a quad-zillion times. I cried when Steve Thomas-This Old House host of several years quit this year. Altho, I live in an apartment, my storage room off the balcony is full of power tools, wood working equipment, etc, that I rarely have an opportunity to use. It got so bad that I had to start volunteering for "Habitiat for Humanity" projects just so I could use them. When they ask for help and say: "just show up with a framing hammer" I have my pickup full of tools for every possible event that never has a chance to transpire. I draw silent snickers from the other volunteers now. It's brutal. I get the shakes so bad waiting for the one weekend a month I get to go work on a house, that I been dreaming about getting downsized by my company so I can go full time with "Habitat" as a "house leader". Even worse, I been acutally thinking about getting married and buying a house so I can convert the garage to a wood working shop. Norm Abrams of "The New Yankee Workshop" is a god to me. I have even started watching those HGTV shows like "Devine Design" that are actually meant to appeal to the females.

Is there any hope for me. :help: :help:

Sounds like your getting married for the right reason, and not something silly.

There is hope!

You shouldn't feel bad, you should pursue your ambitions and do it for a living. Maybe it doesn't pay as much as whatever you do right now, but I bet you would be pretty happy being a full time carpenter. I wish I loved something (something that is considered a full time job) that much!
I read an article last year that stated there is a growing shortage of tradesmen (carpenters, plumbers, electricians) because everyone wants to be a programmer, engineer, etc. The only apprentices left are people that just fall into it and they aren't serious about going throught the whole apprenticeship and become master tradesmen. You sound like someone that should go for it.

Modyna,

I also like those shows. :) Although not as much as you. I liked the show much more when Norm and Bob Vila were on. It was obvious when Steve started the show that he did not know very much about home improvement.

You should check out Monster House, it is pretty cool.

I have some Bob Vila movies on CD-ROMs. I can sell them to you. :)

Also, if you can get Canadian TV, look at "The Red Green Show". Perhaps sign up for Junkyard Wars?

Hey, what about an ECGN team in Junkyard Wars? :D

Junkyard Wars is definitely one of my favorite shows on television. It's too bad that it isn't more popular but I guess it's too smart for the mainstream population. Anyways, my father's a carpenter and I remember all those years ago when I was like 6 or 7, sitting on the couch with my father and watching This Old House with Bob, and New Yankee Workshop with Norm. As I grew up I've spent many summers working carpentry/construction with my father. This past summer I actually worked with him on building a $6 million home, and helping to restore a house built in the late 1700s. It's very satisfying work.

PBS here carried the "The Red Green Show" and I really liked their wacky off beat humor. Good show! Junkyard Wars was really good early, with the pure british productions, but now its gone global, or at least American and some of the things they have built were not very interesting. However, the concept is neat.

Thanks on the offer of the CD-ROMs. Sheesh! Just what I need is too see them all again. ;)
