Should I upgrade?
I currently have an Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4200 with 64megs of RAM, and I'm considering picking up an ATI Radeon 9600XT with 128 megs of ram. My question is: Is it worth the $150? Any input is appreciated.

Ti4200, while a great card FOR IT'S TIME, has long since been replaced by newer hardware. It's really a dx 8.0/8.1 card, and while that's fine and dandy for games like BF1942, it sucks for stuff like Halo, Max Payne 2, etc (all dx9 games). Also, the memory on the 9600xt is probably ALOT faster (sorry, I'm feeling to lazy to go track down the exact numbers
), as is the core speed. While ATI/Nvidia both have new hardware due within the next 2-3mo's, I doubt you'll see much improvement at the price level you're looking at......If not the 9600xt, find a 9700pro and buy it.....or at least get a 9500/9600pro....

I've posted this before, but for what it's worth.

Looking at the BF 1942 benchmarks.. I'd say about 50% increase in FPS. Is that worth $150? That's up to you.
I have the same GF 4 Ti 4200 card. It works fine for now, but I'm seriously considering an upgrade in the next few months. I am going to need a better card for Half-Life 2.
Maybe you could save for another month or two and buy a better card when you really need it. Prices will probably be even cheaper in two months. Just a thought.

The cycle is coming around for the next generation video cards in the end of Q1 beggining of Q2.
When this happens I am betting that the prices of even 9800 PRO/XT will drop significantly.
I use the Geforce Ti4200 also and GOD DO I NEED A NEWER CARD. I think I am going to wait for the prices to drop even more.

There is always the next big thing, so he would never upgrade.
That's not what I meant. He should upgrade when he really needs the new card, like when games slow down until the're not playable.
There's no real point in prepairing for future games, when you can wait until that certain game comes out and see if you need the upgrade then
