Game Controllers

Can someone tell me why they make game controllers with those right and left rubber balls on the bottom? I wanted a better controller to play NHL 2004 and I get in the game and the damn arrow keys dont move the players the stupid rubber things on the bottom do... Who the hell plays games with one hand at the very botton of the controller using a stupid round rubber black thing to move a player while the other hand is higher and to the right to use the buttons? I absolutely hate those things and these games dont even give you options to use your normal arrow keys????? whoever invented these black rubber things should die!
