You dont NEED to have icons on the desktop. They can be stored in "MY COMPUTER."
Hes using Auto Hide. Right click on the taskbar, and go to Properties. Look for "auto hide the taskbar."
When you roll your mouse down there, it will pop up. When not in use, it will dissapear.

A bit messy at the moment, I use a small program from MS that changes the desktop by itself and have it set with pictures of my daughter
