Vid card or monitor problem

Postby Rocky Dennis » Mon Aug 23, 2004 7:03 am

I saw this on my way out the door this morning and didn't have time to investigate. It's gotta be the monitor or the vid card. What do you guys think?

Looks like your hard-drive needs to be demagnatized.

Vid Card. The problem is showing up in your screenshot, so it's your video card.

Well, how did you take the SS?

cavalier is right. If it shows in the screenshot, it's the card. If it were the monitor, or the monitor cable, the SS would like fine, but you'd see that at home.

I was kinda hoping it would be the card because I have 2 extra to try but not an extra monitor. I'm thinking of taking these steps
1. Fire it up and pray it went away
2. Reinstall drivers- reboot
3. Open the case and look at the card/take it out and put back in, spit and yell at it- reboot
4. Throw in a 128meg 9000 pro and turn down my settings:(

I think this is a valid reason for having to leave work early

i had that with my ati9800pro 128mb.
it was brand new but if u jiggled it in its agp slot it would look like that on screen.
i tryed it in 3 differnt mb's and it did the same in all of them.
i sent it back and they sent me another.
and yes i would consider this a family emergency lol

I've seen this before, try reseating your video card, it looks like it isn't in the slot all the way. (Vibations from fans, heating up and cooling down will cause chip creep). With your computer off, open it up and push it into the slot, make sure your touching a metal part of your computer case or you might might fry it. Wait a minute and boot up and see if the problem has gone away.

When I was in high school taking PC repair classes the teacher would randomly *funk up* a someone's computer before class and we had to figure out what was wrong. I fixed what was wrong with mine but the screen kept doing what you see and I couldn't figure out what was wrong and I asked the instructor for help and he walked up looked at the screen and he started troubleshooting it, and several minutes later he fixed it and told me he accidently knocked the video card loose from the slot when he funked up anouther part. DOH!

Thanks Lord and zgggy. I'll pop the hood first and see whats up. I guess I failed to mention its a Powercrapper 9700 pro. When I went to replace my 9000 pro in January the fan blades on the card were pretty chewed up so I either have mice or there's something hitting it

My CPU fan is imbalanced so my video card does what your is doing every once in a while, a quick reseat and it's ready to go

I just got home and fired up my comp and everything is fine. I'm still gonna open it up just in case.

Thanks for the help everyone

Even if it's fine now, it may be indicating that the card is dying, or had come loose (heating/cooling from the pc being turned on/off can cause it to slowly "wiggle" out of the slot). Make sure the card is well seated, and that the cooling fan is not clogged with dust.

Hey thanks Bullhead. I'll open the case later tonight when I'm done playing to make sure its fitted well and my airflow and everything else is ok
