Unbelievable horrible. I read up on this to try and figure out how someone could die from water intoxication. Weird stuff, truly. I first thought it was something crazy like not urinating that did it, or kidney failure, but it's actually some crazy thing having to do with salt and electrolytes. Once you have too much water, you have a limited amount of time to remedy it with electrolytes/saline or you die.

I've seen fatal water intoxication. It used to be seen especially among kids at raves, where they all take E and drink boat loads of water (although it is also thought that E might cause water retention, as well.)

Basically drinking tons of water causes hyponatremia, and the resultant osmotic shift causes cells to swell and lyse. The most common cause of death, then, is swelling of the brain. First, seizures occur, then the brainstem herniates through the foramen magnum. Intrinsic respiratory centers are located here, so the patient ultimately stops breathing and dies a few minutes thereafter.

Hyponatremia is sometimes seen in infants as well, where the mother literally waters down the baby formula in an effort to make it last longer. Then they wonder why their kid is seizing...

And damnit Larry! I'm a doctor...and I used to be a paramedic! Ha!

foramen magnum, latin for big hole, the hole in the skull where the spinal column passes through.

Yeah, thought of the doctor or PA thing for a while now, however I have been disgusted with the whole healthcare industry.

Too much uncertainty for Docs and PA's between all of the Indians coming over getting there MD, willing to do what a doctor does for what a PA makes.

Less specialists needed do to technology upgrades. x-rays, CT, MRI, and test results being read by docs overseas.

Litigation nuff said

Insurance companies dictating what they will pay for procedure, what procedures and tests they will and will not pay for, regardless of whats best for the patient.

That left me with a few options

Nurses have it made (as far as there future in healthcare) National shortage with no end in sight.

Being a paramedic, I couldn't "step down" to a nurse even though they make 2-3 times what I made as a Paramedic.

So even though I am not a nurse, I took a "nursing" position ($6 hr raise) in our education department. I am the education coordinator for ACLS, PALS, and BCLS. Running and teaching those classes, as well as teaching EKG, critical care, and customer service classes.

I still ride the ambulance when I want, they just pay me at my old rate for that time.

I am currently working toward my MBA with a concentration in Healthcare management. The classes are held on the hospital campus by the local university for hospital employees. I decided on this path after looking at the starting salaries of graduates with there PA vs MBA and they are the same. Only difference is a I can use my MBA in any field.

Maybe after that I will pursue my MD or DO and become a medical director for a service someday (close to retirement) and have nothing better to do that keep my EMS service on the cutting edge.

All and all I feel the future in healthcare (the money maker) at least in my lifetime will be long term care and I hope to open several assisted living facilities, and maybe a skilled nursing facility when I graduate with my MBA

Probaly a lot more than any of you wanted to know, sorry to take so much of your time.

Now go catch up on the buli :buli:

Whoooooooooo, back your ego-centric truck up for a minute.

I've been an ICU nurse for 10 years now and take great offense. I've got more knowledge than just airway, IV, and get them to the damn ER so the real healthcare professional can save the patient...than YOU adrenaline addicted, sleeping in the local grocery store parking lots, fast food gulping, pissing where noone can see you paramedics.

You asked for it smith, now you're in for a smack down not from a "step down" nurse either.

that was interersting lord, and you too chick, i really dont know much about the details of either of those jobs. I didnt realize paramedics were so underpaid?? Nurses make lots huh??

I dont wanna know exactly what you individually make but what would someone in that field expect to make approx??

For instance a starting PC guy at my co (we just brought in 2 more) starts at about 38-42.... avg raise is your normal 3-4% plus we get a 6% ish bonus every year based on how the company performs.

Not sure about paramedics salary whitesox, but nurses are paid by experience usually starting pay is around $24 an hour with yearly increases of no more than 3%. Agencies pay more than hospitals, and hospitals pay more than extended care facilities.

Ok, ok guys. I dont care who gets paid more, or where you pee when you gotta go. All I know as a patient, you both have an important role in getting me to the hospital and then taking care of me so I live. Dont fight about it because with out one the other cant do their job, so youre both equally necessary. The only difference in my town is, paramedics get paid whatever the town can afford, and nurses get paid whatever the hospital can afford and that makes a huge difference in salary.
You both deserve salaries close to Pro Baseball players becuase your jobs are WAY more important than playing sports (no offense Sox).

I expected such a response, I just figured I had taken up enough of everyones time already so I didn't go into detail there. Since you asked...

I will respond, just don't have time now, I am here
