I think the point is the ability to write games and other software on a platform that does not require you to pay Herr Gates. With Linux, the XBox can join the Internet as an equal and not have to pay the man a cent.

Freedom and the ability to write your own games, royalty free.

I love the new avatar Richie - I'm I'm glad to see you back online.

XBOX running linux can be connected to another Linux computer. You can run Linux based emulation programs, etc.

Even if all the games were free, and all i had to do was buy and Xbox, I still wouldn't. I'm betting that with my system I easily out perform an xbox anyway and I like to play FPS games, on consoles FPS games all still suck. Some of the single player was good, but even then I'll play it for a few mins and get board. Linux however, I'dd like to see someone run that who knows what they're doing. I am more an intermediate level linux (Solaris to be exact) user. So this all seems interesting, but you have my reasons for not really caring.

Thanks freedom :)

I'm not too interested in consoles either, i've just never seen a console that has been given a useful alternate OS that has opened the door to so many possibilites.

At least it could be a cheap firewall and webserver :)

I'm not saying that running Linux on the XBOX would revolutionize the industry or anything, but it would add more versitility to and longer life to an already existing piece of equipment. It would probably be able to support third - party mods for games too. That alone is worth a lot. Especially with XBOX live capabilities.

Ugh. I think a lot of you miss a crucial point . . . MS built the xbox - it deserves to profit from it. It's how capitalism works. Computers and software are not free (as much of the linux community often forgets) . . . someone always has to pay.

And consider this . . . you stop paying Bill Gates ("the man") for xbox stuff, and Billy Gates will no longer produce xboxes. Why would he? Believe me, he is not in the business of making consoles to be a philanthropist.

The xbox, if I remember correctly, is basically just a low power PC in a fancy wrapper, essentially...

It is cheaper than the PCs us online FPS types use, but those can do so much more than gaming...

Besides, the only game that has been exclusively xbox that I had an interest in is Halo, and that is about to come out on PC if I remember right...

Right on all accounts. Halo for the PC (with a TON of improvements) comes out on September 1. It's still my favorite single player game ever.

Hey, I'm a huge fan of MicroSoft and Bill Gates. People can bitch all they want but just think where we would be without everything he's done.

I'm just saying that I would like my XBOX to have a value after the developers stop producing games for it. Sony has managed to buy out the majority of the developers already.

I understand your reason Freedom, but your reason varies wildly from why most people want Linux on the xbox . . . regretably, most people are only really interested in it for game piracy, which is just plain wrong, no matter how you look at it.
